Most self-storage access systems record when a customer enters the property, but that information is usually used only by the facility. What if renters could use those same access records to create their own notification preferences?

A “Personalized Access Alert” could let customers choose when they want to receive a notification. A renter might ask to be alerted whenever their account is used after 9 p.m., when access occurs on a day they normally do not visit, or every time an authorized user enters the property.

This could be especially useful for families sharing a unit or businesses with multiple employees who have access. Instead of constantly checking activity, the customer receives a simple notification when something falls outside the preferences they selected.

The feature could also make existing access-control technology feel more valuable. Operators would not necessarily need a completely new security system—they could simply give customers more visibility into information the facility may already be collecting.

What to do about it: Review what access information your current gate system records and whether customer notifications can be customized. Start with simple options such as “notify me after hours” or “notify me every time my access credential is used.” More transparency can give renters greater control without making the process complicated.
