Could Curbside Retrieval Turn Storage Into an On-Demand Service?

Traditional self storage assumes customers will drive to the facility whenever they need something. But what if renters could retrieve certain stored items without spending time walking through the property, opening their unit, and digging through boxes?

A facility could offer an optional “Curbside Retrieval” program for customers who keep designated, clearly labeled containers near the front of their unit. Through an app or online request, the renter could select a container and schedule it to be brought to a secure pickup area during staffed hours.

This could be especially useful for customers storing seasonal decorations, business supplies, important records, sports equipment, or frequently rotated household items. Instead of treating storage as a place customers occasionally visit, the facility becomes an extension of the customer’s home or business.

The service could also create a new premium revenue stream. Facilities might offer a limited number of monthly retrievals as part of an upgraded rental package or charge individually for each request. The key would be strict authorization procedures, clearly defined eligible items, and secure handling standards.

What to do about it: Test the concept with a small group of customers using sealed, numbered containers and written authorization. Establish clear rules covering access, scheduling, liability, and pickup verification before expanding. Making stored belongings easier to access could change how customers think about the value of self storage.
