Stop Selling Square Feet: Could Life-Event Storage Packages Convert More Renters?

Most self-storage websites ask customers to choose a unit size before they fully understand what they need. But customers rarely wake up thinking, “I need a 10×10.” They are usually dealing with a renovation, downsizing, college move, military deployment, business expansion, or another life change.

Instead of marketing only by square footage, facilities could create simple “Life-Event Storage Packages” built around those situations. A renovation package might include a recommended unit size, protective covers, flexible access, and a short-term rental option. A college package could focus on smaller units, summer storage, and easy move-out dates.

This approach makes the buying process easier because customers can start with the problem they are trying to solve rather than guessing how much space they need. It also gives facilities a natural way to bundle supplies, insurance options, climate control, or other relevant add-ons without making the experience feel overly complicated.

Life-event packages could also improve marketing. Instead of running generic ads for “storage units available,” operators could target specific needs with messages like “Renovating Your Home?” or “Heading Home for the Summer?” The facility becomes part of the solution instead of simply another place renting space.

What to do about it: Identify the four or five most common reasons customers rent at your facility. Build a simple package around each one with recommended sizes, typical rental length, and useful add-ons. Customers may find it much easier to buy a solution they understand than a square footage number they have to interpret.
