Self-storage demand does not arrive evenly throughout the week. Saturdays, month-end weekends, and certain afternoon periods can create crowded drive aisles, limited carts, and longer waits for customers. Instead of treating every move-in time the same, facilities could use pricing to encourage customers to arrive during quieter periods.
An “Off-Peak Move-In” program could offer a small rental credit, free lock, or discounted moving supplies to customers who schedule their initial move-in during lower-traffic windows. The goal would not be to restrict access, but to give customers a reason to choose times when the facility has more capacity.
Spreading move-ins throughout the week could make operations easier for staff while creating a better first experience for renters. Fewer customers arriving simultaneously means more available carts, easier loading access, and more time for employees to assist customers who need help.
The concept could also give operators better control over facility traffic without expensive expansion projects. Instead of adding more equipment or redesigning loading areas, facilities may be able to improve capacity simply by shifting when customers use them.
What to do about it: Identify the busiest and quietest move-in periods at your facility. Test a small incentive for customers who select an off-peak arrival window and track whether traffic becomes more balanced. Sometimes improving capacity is less about adding space and more about using existing space more strategically.
