Could a Box Exchange Station Cut Waste and Help Customers Save?

Moving and storage create a lot of cardboard. Customers often arrive with dozens of boxes, use them once, and then throw them away when they move out. At the same time, another customer may be arriving that same day to purchase brand-new boxes.

A “Box Exchange Station” could connect those two needs. Customers moving out could leave clean, reusable boxes in a designated area, while incoming renters could take available boxes for their own move.

The program could be simple. Facilities could accept only dry, structurally sound boxes and organize them by size. Damaged boxes would still go directly to recycling, while usable ones get another life before entering the waste stream.

There could also be a customer-experience benefit. Free or low-cost reusable boxes offer a small savings during an already expensive move, while the facility creates another useful amenity without requiring much space or technology.

What to do about it: Designate a small, clearly marked area for reusable boxes and establish basic acceptance rules. Keep the station organized, recycle damaged materials quickly, and track whether customers actually use it. Something as simple as giving a box one more move could reduce waste while adding value for renters.
