Finding an available moving cart should be simple, but at larger self-storage facilities it can quickly become frustrating. Customers may arrive at a loading area only to discover that every cart has been left on another floor, parked at a different entrance, or abandoned somewhere in the building.

A “Smart Cart Locator” could make carts easier to find without requiring an expensive tracking system. Each cart could have a QR code that customers scan when taking or returning it. The facility’s app or mobile site could then show which cart stations currently have equipment available.

The information could also help operators understand how carts actually move around the property. If one entrance is constantly running out while another station stays full, staff could reposition equipment before busy periods instead of waiting for customers to complain.

There is also an opportunity to improve accountability. Simple check-in and return records could discourage carts from being left in random hallways while helping staff identify which locations need more equipment.

What to do about it: Number your carts, create designated return stations, and track where they are picked up and returned for a few weeks. Even a basic QR-based system could reveal patterns that make equipment easier to find and the facility easier to use.
