Could Adjacent-Unit Priority Help Keep Growing Customers?
September 9, 2026Could a First-Visit Nudge Reduce Online Rental Drop-Off?
Online rentals make it possible for customers to secure a storage unit without ever speaking with an employee. That convenience is valuable, but it also creates a new challenge: a customer can complete the rental and still never make it through the gate.
A “First-Visit Nudge” could automatically check whether a new renter has accessed the facility within the first few days. If they have not, the customer could receive a short message with their gate instructions, facility map, office contact information, and a reminder that their unit is ready.
The message could also uncover problems early. Maybe the customer cannot find their access code, is confused about where the unit is located, or has changed their moving schedule. Instead of discovering that frustration after a cancellation request, staff gets an opportunity to help while the relationship is still new.
This also creates a useful operational metric: time from rental to first access. Tracking that number could help operators identify whether certain locations, rental channels, or instructions are creating unnecessary friction for new customers.
What to do about it: Use gate-access data to identify new renters who have not visited within 48–72 hours. Send one helpful automated message rather than another sales promotion. The goal is simple: make sure a completed rental actually becomes a successful move-in.
