Could Accessibility-Based Unit Matching Improve the Storage Experience?
September 8, 2026Could Adjacent-Unit Priority Help Keep Growing Customers?
Customers do not always outgrow storage all at once. A renter may start with one unit and gradually need more room as a business adds inventory, a household renovation expands, or life circumstances change. When that happens, the easiest solution may be another unit directly beside the one they already have.
An “Adjacent-Unit Priority” program could give existing customers first notice when a neighboring unit becomes available. Instead of forcing a renter to relocate everything into a larger unit—or rent additional space on the other side of the property—they could expand right where they are.
This could be especially valuable for small businesses and long-term customers. Keeping inventory, equipment, or household belongings together makes storage easier to manage and gives customers another reason to stay with the facility rather than search elsewhere for more space.
The program could also help operators retain growing accounts. If a customer mentions needing additional room, staff could flag the neighboring units and automatically notify them when one becomes vacant. That turns a potential move-out into an expansion opportunity.
What to do about it: Add an optional “notify me about nearby units” preference to customer accounts. Track which occupied units have neighboring spaces and automatically contact interested renters when those units open. Sometimes the easiest way to grow revenue is helping an existing customer expand by just one door.
