At a busy self-storage facility, doors get opened constantly. Loading doors, hallway entrances, climate-controlled building doors, and even individual units may occasionally be left open longer than expected. Most of the time, staff may not notice until someone happens to walk by.
A simple “Door-Open Alert” system could change that. Sensors could notify staff when a monitored door remains open beyond a set amount of time, helping the team respond before a small oversight turns into a bigger operational issue.
For climate-controlled buildings, prolonged open doors can make temperature and humidity management more difficult. At loading areas or secured entrances, an open door can also affect traffic flow and access control. Real-time alerts give staff a chance to investigate instead of discovering the problem later.
The data could also reveal patterns. If the same loading door is frequently left open during certain hours, operators may need better signage, different equipment, or a change in procedure. Over time, a simple alert can become useful operational information.
What to do about it: Identify the doors where being left open creates the biggest operational impact. Test inexpensive contact sensors on a few locations and set alerts only after a reasonable time threshold. The goal is not more notifications—it is catching the right problems sooner.
