Could Backup Power Keep Self Storage Running During an Outage?

A power outage can affect much more than the lights at a self-storage facility. Gates, elevators, access-control systems, cameras, climate equipment, and office technology may all depend on reliable electricity.

A “Critical Systems Backup” strategy could help operators identify which equipment needs to remain functional when the grid goes down. Instead of trying to power the entire property, facilities could prioritize essential systems such as gate controls, emergency lighting, security equipment, communications, and selected building systems.

Battery storage, generators, or a combination of solar and battery technology could give facilities additional resilience during short outages. The right setup would depend on the property, but the goal is the same: reduce disruption and give staff more options when normal power is unavailable.

There is also a customer-experience benefit. Clear communication about temporary access changes, elevator availability, or office operations can prevent customers from arriving without knowing what to expect. Backup power paired with a strong communication plan can make an unexpected outage much easier to manage.

What to do about it: Identify which systems are most important during an outage and determine how long they need to remain operational. Review backup-power options with qualified professionals and create a clear communication plan for customers. Preparing before the lights go out can make the facility much more resilient.
