Could a Storage “Test Drive” Reduce Unit-Size Mistakes?

Choosing a storage unit from measurements alone can be difficult. Customers may understand what 10-by-10 means on paper, but they often struggle to picture how furniture, boxes, and equipment will actually fit inside that space.

A facility could create a simple “Storage Test Drive” area using floor markings that show the dimensions of its most popular unit sizes. Customers could place boxes, furniture outlines, or sample items inside the marked space to better understand how much room they need before signing a rental agreement.

This hands-on experience could reduce transfers, cancellations, and customer frustration caused by selecting the wrong unit. It also gives facility employees a more useful way to explain unit sizes than relying only on square footage or generic comparison charts.

The idea could also become a strong marketing feature. Photos and short videos of customers testing different layouts could be used on the facility’s website and social media to make the rental process feel easier and more transparent.

What to do about it: Mark two or three common unit sizes in an open area using durable floor tape or painted lines. Add sample boxes, furniture outlines, and simple signs showing what typically fits inside each space. Helping customers visualize their rental before move-in can create more confident decisions and fewer problems later.
